Preventing KRL Accident in JABODETABEK

On may 20 in a sunny morning 3 years ago. A bunch of people near pondok cina station was shouting each other warned someone who was crossing railway. A last year student hit by KRL. She was a good student, smart and she was waiting for her graduation.

She was, however, running without looking around, and she was using a headset. The 22 years old student was returning from a computer rent across campus in Depok, and then she was hit by KRL  with severe injuries. This last year student is my senior in campus. Nowdays, she left a memory and wishes in campus, a wishes that she will graduate from university as bachelor degree.

Unfortunately, tragic KRL accident involving pedestrian are much too common in all part of the Jabodetabek. After researching the subject  for my speech, I have come to conclusion as the ministry of transportation. That the best way to prevent such accident is to build underpass.

I know that solution will be so expensive and perhaps will cause severe traffic and inhibit your dialy activites, but I ask you to listen with an open mind while we discuss some of the problems associated with pedestrian victims, the major causes of the problems, and a plan that will help solve the problem.

No  matter how one looks at the evidence, it all leads to one fact. there are too many KRL accident, injuries, and death involving pedestrian. According to the police data 2012 of Depok resort. Accident cause by crossing the railway increase 40% from preceeding year. Last year alone 30 people were killed in KRL accident involving pedestrian in Depok, almost exactly the number of one class student in my campus.

Evidence also show that train accident throughout Indonesia was dominated at the train crossing. According to Jakarta Transportation Board, train crossing have the highest percentage of accident place in Indonesia, that is 60%.

Now that we've seen the extent of the problem, we can explore its causes one of the causes is earphone. Remember my senior accident at the beginning of my speech? there was an earphone on her  neck after the accident. Due to a lot of accident involving earphone, head of public relation of KAI , area operation 1, Mateta Rizalulhaq, asked that do not use an earphone or headset near the railway because you will not hear a warning from KRL and people around you.

A second causes is revealed by distraction research. We all know what it is like when addicted with smartphone, BBM chat pingging, notification of social media appearing, user smiling and have a good time. The problem is all these factors create distraction.  A new study, published online in the journal Injury Prevention, warns that distracted walking is quickly becoming jus as much of a hazard as distracted driving. The reasearchers found that texting while crossing the street or railway was the riskiest activity, with pedestrians four time more likely to ignore oncoming traffic and disobey traffic signal while checking their devices. The study also found that texters took much longer to cross a street than those who do not text while doing the same task.

A third causes is hurrying factor, in 2007 Transport Safety Victoria conduct a study into pedestrian behaviour at level crossings. Findings show 18-25 year olds are most likely to cross the tracks when a train is coming, out of the age groups surveyed. and the crossings also most likely to be influenced by factors such as hurrying.

So the extent of the problem is clear, and so is causes, what steps can we take to help bring about a solution?

First, building underpass for KRL in Jabodetabek. Besides avoid pedestrian, it also will reduce the traffic near doorstop or crossings

Second, Law policy to restrict using smartphone or earphone  near railway and street. If one is using it, then they will be punished. Hence, there must be a responsible officer to arrest people who violate the policy and will standby  at certain points in crossings

Third, set up crossing sign, increase doorstop crossing those who haven't and crossing just permitted in legal railway crossings

Now I know all of this might sound harsh and inconvenient, but the evidence is clear that it would save  a significant numbers of lifes. Everyone in this room has felt to be graduated student, But my senior in campus still left a wishes, can you imagine if you are a parent of this last year student?

There is no way to solve all the problems we encounter on the railway, but we can do something to help save  the lifes of people and make the railway safer for all of us. As I said earlier, this might sound harsh or inconvenient. But I know my senior in campus would gladly trade both for the chance to life again
